The Full Story

My name is Beatrice Jelagat Korir. I was born in 2003 in a small village called Oterit. I am the fifth born in a family of six children (five boys and 1 girl) of my mother Caroline Chepkorir and my father John Kiplagat.

I live in Oterit Village with my parents in a semi-permanent house. Oterit is found in Mogotio Sub County, Emining Division and Emining location in Rift Valley. Livelihood of the people in the area depend on peasantry and livestock raising. Drought condition is a common occurrence in the area. This community lives in a vicious cycle of poverty. Due to unstable economic activities in the area, my parents encountered many problems in educating us.

I went to Oterit pre-primary school, primary and secondary school. In the year 2017 when I was in class 7, I was the luckiest girl in Oterit Primary school to be enrolled in the child sponsorship programme through HMDS in Kenya and Periamma Denmark. I worked hard in my studies and in 2018 I was able to sit for my final Kenya Certificate of Primary education which I passed very well.

I had a vision of bright future for me & my family and this was possible through investing in Education. I got an admission letter and was able to join Form One in Oterit Secondary School in the year 2019 and completed Form Four in year 2022 with a mean grade of C plain. Thanks to my sponsors and friends who are Ida and Kathrine for supporting me to walk through this educational journey.

Despite the challenges in High School that girls go through like peer pressure, teen pregnancies, teen marriages, FGM just few to mention I was able to overcome them and focused on my studies.

In the year 2024, I got a calling letter and was enrolled at Bondo Teachers Training College where I'm pursuing Diploma course in Education as I want to be Teacher and prove to the society that girls have equal opportunities in education as boys, as the saying goes if you educate girl you educate the whole Nation.

Thanks to HMDS and Periamma Denmark and my sponsors. Our people are beginning to acknowledge that Education is now important and have started sending girls to school. We aim to achieve something in our lives. We have to be ambitious to raise up our families from illiterate to literate. Now we are seeing a change, as many people are taking their children to school. We are agents of change.
